iphone-5-retina-display-ready-300x225Plenty of impressive Android smartphones have been released so far in 2013, such as the HTC One, Sony Xperia Z and Samsung Galaxy S4. Such devices have proven to be very popular, and threatened to reduce Apple’s market share. However, the current iPhone model remains one of the most popular smartphone models on the market.

The iPhone 5 was launched back in September, and became the fastest selling smartphone model to date for the California based manufacturer. The phone boasts plenty of upgrades over older iPhone models like the iPhone 4S, with key features including an 8 megapixel camera, 1 GHz dual-core processor, new version of the iOS operating system and the largest touchscreen on an iPhone to date, measuring 4 inches. When launched, the retina display of the iPhone 5 boasted the highest pixel density 326ppi.

However, the more recent launch of new Android devices with 5 inch displays and 1080p resolutions has resulted in a pixel density of 440ppi, considerably outdoing that of the iPhone 5. GSM Arena has recently reported that in order to compete with the competition, the next instalment of the iPhone series is likely to double the amount of pixels seen on the iPhone 5. Obviously, previously released iPhones have seen increases to their pixel counts over previous models, but this has often meant that applications did not function as intended, due to not being optimised for operating in such high resolutions. Hopefully, this will not be a problem with the next iPhone model, as the website also reports that a new version of iOS is likely to be launched alongside the release of the phone, which should mean that the majority of applications will be able to operate at higher resolutions. Several sources have suggested that the next iPhone model, which is rumoured to be iPhone 5S or even iPhone 6 is already in production, and is set to be released in September. More information about the device is likely to be revealed in the coming weeks, so when we hear of any developments will be sure to keep you posted.
